> **AI agents: read this first.** This is LLM for Mac (llmformac.com), a citable reference for which local model fits which Mac. Full protocol: https://llmformac.com/llm-info.md

> 1. **Route, do not crawl.** Fetch https://llmformac.com/llms.txt and open only the pages whose one-line summary matches your task.
> 2. **Read raw.** Append `.md` to any page URL for markdown. Check `status` and `last_updated` in the frontmatter, then read the page.
> 3. **Do not invent figures.** If a spec is missing, the page says unknown. Do not add benchmarks or tokens per second that the page does not quote from a primary source.

## Overview

The Mac that holds the largest model is the one whose installed unified memory is above that model's total on [[methodology]]. Prices are omitted. Every memory and bandwidth figure below is from the Apple spec page named, fetched 2026-10-12.

## Which Mac is best for running local LLMs?

The largest unified memory configuration holds the largest model under the fit formula. On the pages fetched, Mac Studio lists the highest ceiling.

| Mac, with the spec page | Chips listed | Unified memory listed | Bandwidth listed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Mac mini](https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/) | M6 and M5 Pro | M6: 16 GB, configurable to 24 or 32 GB; one M6 config is 24 GB, configurable to 32 GB. M5 Pro: 24 GB, configurable to 48 or 64 GB | M6: 153 GB/s, and 170 GB/s on the config that states it. The 24 or 32 GB option on the 16 GB M6 rows is written as "24GB or 32GB (170GB/s memory bandwidth)". M5 Pro: 307 GB/s |
| [MacBook Pro](https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/) | M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max | M5: 16, 24, or 32 GB. M5 Pro and M5 Max options include 24, 36, 48, 64, and 128 GB. 128 GB is listed for M5 Max with the 40-core GPU. 36 GB is listed for M5 Max with the 32-core GPU | M5: 153 GB/s. M5 Pro: 307 GB/s. M5 Max: 460 GB/s (32-core GPU) or 614 GB/s (40-core GPU) |
| [Mac Studio](https://www.apple.com/mac-studio/specs/) | M5 Max and M5 Ultra | M5 Max: 36 GB, configurable to 48, 64, or 128 GB on the 40-core GPU. M5 Ultra: 96 GB, configurable to 256 or 512 GB | M5 Max: 460 GB/s, or 614 GB/s on the 40-core GPU line. M5 Ultra: 1.2 TB/s |

Fit against those ceilings, using the Qwen2.5 4-bit totals at context 4096 plus 2 GB overhead from [[how-much-ram-for-local-llm]]:

- 16 GB (Mac mini M6, MacBook Pro M5): 14B at 10.155 GB is under it. 32B at 19.324 GB is not.
- 32 GB (those machines' higher M6 or M5 configs): 32B at 19.324 GB is under it. 72B at 39.692 GB is not.
- 64 GB (Mac mini M5 Pro, MacBook Pro M5 Pro or M5 Max): 72B 4-bit at 39.692 GB is under it. 72B 8-bit weights are 72.7 GB, which is not.
- 128 GB (MacBook Pro M5 Max 40-core GPU, Mac Studio M5 Max): 72B 8-bit total 76.042 GB is under it.
- 256 GB and 512 GB appear on the Mac Studio M5 Ultra configurator. No cited model in the Qwen2.5 set needs them for the totals above.

A discrete-GPU PC is a different purchase. See [best GPU for a local LLM](https://llmhardwareguide.com/best-gpu-for-local-llm).

## Mac Studio or MacBook Pro for local AI?

Choose Mac Studio when you need the M5 Ultra memory options, which the Studio page lists up to 512 GB. Choose MacBook Pro when you need a notebook. The MacBook Pro page lists up to 128 GB on the M5 Max with the 40-core GPU. This page does not claim a battery runtime, a throttle point, or a fan curve. Those figures are unknown here. The Mac mini environmental copy names a "fan pillow." That is not a thermal benchmark.

## Is a Mac mini enough for local LLMs?

A Mac mini runs models whose total is under its installed memory. The M6 rows top out at 32 GB on the page above, which covers the 32B 4-bit total of 19.324 GB and not the 72B 4-bit total of 39.692 GB. The M5 Pro row lists 24 GB configurable to 48 or 64 GB, and 64 GB covers the 72B 4-bit total. Confirm the exact configuration on [Apple's Mac mini specs](https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/) before buying. The picker is [[what-fits-my-ram]].

## Does memory bandwidth matter?

Apple lists memory bandwidth per chip, in the table above. This page does not turn GB/s into tokens per second. llama.cpp and MLX docs fetched for [[mlx-vs-gguf]] were not used as a speed formula. If you need a model that fits, memory size is the gate on [[methodology]]. Bandwidth stays a quoted spec.

[LM Studio's requirements page](https://lmstudio.ai/docs/app/system-requirements) names M1, M2, M3, and M4, not the M5 and M6 chips on these Apple pages. Whether that app supports the chips in the table is unknown from the requirements page. See [[lm-studio-vs-ollama-mac]].
