Overview
The Mac mini M6 LLM question comes down to memory: Apple’s Mac mini spec page lists the M6 at 16 GB, configurable to 24 or 32 GB, and the M5 Pro at 24 GB, configurable to 48 or 64 GB, so the memory tier you pick sets the largest model you can load. The M6 rows read 153 GB/s at 16 GB and 170 GB/s at 24 GB and 32 GB, so moving up from 16 GB adds both capacity and bandwidth. Access date for every source: 2026-10-13. Speed in tokens per second is unknown here; see measure-tokens-per-second-mac to measure it on your own machine.
What does the Mac mini M6 offer for local LLMs?
The M6 has a 12-core CPU (2 super, 4 performance, 6 efficiency cores), a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, per the spec page. Apple’s M6 announcement says M6 supports up to 32 GB of unified memory and up to 170 GB/s, “a 10 percent increase over M5.”
It shipped on 2026-09-22 (Apple newsroom). U.S. starting prices on the launch announcement are 1,699 for M5 Pro. The price of a 24 GB, 32 GB, 48 GB or 64 GB configuration is unknown here; use Apple’s configurator.
Mac mini M6 16GB vs 24GB: what changes?
Reading the spec table, the 16 GB M6 is listed at 153 GB/s and the 24 GB and 32 GB upgrades at 170 GB/s. The 16 GB rows also say “Configurable to: 24GB or 32GB (170GB/s memory bandwidth)“. The page’s separate Configure-to-order text does not line up with the table (it lists 24 GB or 32 GB and 32 GB memory blocks without bandwidth), so confirm the bandwidth for your exact configuration before ordering.
| Mac mini | Memory options (Apple) | Bandwidth (Apple) |
|---|---|---|
| M6, base | 16 GB; 24 or 32 GB | 153 GB/s at 16 GB; 170 GB/s at 24 or 32 GB |
| M6, second block | 24 GB base; 32 GB | unknown (no separate figure on the page) |
| M5 Pro | 24 GB; 48 or 64 GB | 307 GB/s |
Arithmetic: 170 / 153 = 1.11, so 24 GB and 32 GB have 11% more bandwidth than 16 GB. What that does to speed is unknown. Bandwidth is a spec, not a result; see apple-silicon-memory-bandwidth.
How much model fits in each tier?
Fit uses this site’s methodology: weights_GB = params x bits / 8 / 1e9, plus KV cache (2 x layers x kv_heads x head_dim x context x 2 bytes / 1e9), plus an assumed 2 GB overhead. Totals for the Qwen2.5 Instruct cards come from how-much-ram-for-local-llm. The share of memory macOS keeps back is unknown, so “left” below is before that reserve.
| Memory | Example (4-bit, context 4096) | Total | Left (memory - total) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 GB | 14B Instruct | 10.155 GB | 5.845 GB |
| 24 GB | 32B Instruct | 19.324 GB | 4.676 GB |
| 32 GB | 32B Instruct at context 32768 | 26.840 GB | 5.160 GB |
| 48 GB | 72B Instruct | 39.692 GB | 8.308 GB |
| 64 GB | 72B Instruct at context 32768 | 49.087 GB | 14.913 GB |
The 32 GB row scales the 32B KV cache 8 times from 1.074 GB to 8.590 GB, so 16.25 + 8.590 + 2 = 26.840 GB. The 64 GB row scales the 72B KV from 1.342 GB to 10.737 GB: 36.35 + 10.737 + 2 = 49.087 GB. A 32B model at 8-bit is 32.5 + 1.074 + 2 = 35.574 GB, over 32 GB. A 72B at 8-bit is 76.042 GB, over 64 GB. Tier picks are on best-llm-for-16gb-mac and best-llm-for-24gb-mac.
Mac mini M4 vs M6: what is different?
Apple’s Mac mini (2024) specs list the M4 at 16 GB, configurable to 24 or 32 GB, with 120 GB/s. The M6 keeps the same memory options and lists 153 or 170 GB/s. Arithmetic: 153 / 120 = 1.28 and 170 / 120 = 1.42.
Apple’s own claims, which are vendor claims and not tests on this site: up to 4x faster AI performance than the M4 Mac mini, and, from its footnote, LM Studio prompt processing up to 4.8x faster than M4. Apple’s footnote 1 names the M4 comparison unit for the AI and graphics claims as a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 32 GB and 2 TB SSD; the footnote for the LM Studio claim says only that Apple ran the tests in July 2026 and does not list the M4 configuration. Apple does not state a generation-speed figure on those pages; generation speed is unknown.
Mac mini M6 vs M5 Pro: when is the Pro worth it?
The M5 Pro is the only Mac mini that reaches 48 or 64 GB. It lists a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, configurable to 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, 307 GB/s, and Thunderbolt 5. Arithmetic: 307 / 170 = 1.81 times the M6’s top bandwidth.
Which M5 Pro CPU/GPU option is required for 48 GB or 64 GB is unknown: the spec page lists the memory and the core upgrade in separate blocks without tying them together. Apple’s M5 Pro claims are vendor claims: up to 8.5x faster LM Studio prompt processing than M2 Pro and up to 4x faster than M4 Pro. Whether you need 64 GB is a fit question: the 72B 4-bit row above is 49.087 GB at context 32768. For an always-on agent host, see local-agent-on-mac and mac-mini-llm.
Questions
Is the Mac mini M6 good for local LLMs?
It runs any model whose total from the formula above is under the memory you configure, up to 32 GB. Speed is unknown on this site; Apple’s M6 claims are vendor claims, and measure-tokens-per-second-mac shows how to test your own unit.
Is 16GB enough on the Mac mini M6?
A 14B model at 4-bit and context 4096 totals 10.155 GB, which is under 16 GB. A 32B at 4-bit totals 19.324 GB, which is not. The macOS reserve is unknown.
Is the M6 24GB worth it over 16GB?
It gives 8 GB more capacity and, as listed on the spec table, 170 GB/s instead of 153 GB/s. The speed effect is unknown.
Can the Mac mini M5 Pro run a 70B model?
By the formula, a 72B model at 4-bit with context 32768 totals 49.087 GB, under 64 GB. Whether it is usable in speed is unknown.
Is the Mac mini M6 32GB enough for 70B models?
No by weight math: the 72B 4-bit weights alone are 36.35 GB, over 32 GB.
